Goals

1.  Increase the Number of Scout Selling
2.  Increase the Average Sales Per Scout

Ideal Year of Scouting

What would your unit's Ideal Year of Scouting be? What would it look like? What activities would it include? How would it be paid for? These are all important questions, but unfortunately ones that frequently go unanswered. Research has shown that only 16% of all units do effective program and budget planning on an annual basis. This often means programs go unplanned until the last minute, and many times don't happen at all. The Ideal Year of Scouting program is a way to prevent this from happening.

Trail's End has developed a budget and planning tool that is outstanding. It is website based and is very easy to use.

The basic concepts of the plan call for units to do the following:

  1. Meet with youth and discuss what activities they would like to do in the upcoming year.
  2. Prepare budget numbers relating to cost of these events and other annual expenses.
  3. Enter this information into your unit's own personal file on the Trail's End website.
  4. Kickoff your unit's Ideal Year of Scouting by presenting this new activity plan and budget at a special parents meeting. Challenge your parents to use the popcorn sale as a way of paying for these activities and having popcorn be the only fundraiser your unit needs for the year.

The Ideal Year of Scouting program has been tested in a number of units nationwide and has produces outstanding results. Data from participating units show an increase in the following:

  •   Youth membership
  •   New Youth
  •   Retention
  •   Trained Leaders
  •   Greater parental involvement
  •   Improved budgeting
  •   Additional quality activities
  •   Fewer Unit Fundraisers
