Trail Building School at Trexler Nature Preserve

Hi, I am the Vice President of the Valley Mountain Bikers (VMB). VMB is a 501c(3) club, over 100 members strong, with a ten-year history of promoting cycling in the Lehigh Valley area through organized rides, social activities for adult and youth and establishing and maintaining healthy trail systems. We are responsible for the building and maintenance of ten miles of sustainably-designed multi-use trails at Walking Purchase Park in Salisbury and had similar involvement at South Mountain Emmaus, Jordan Creek Parkway in Whitehall and Jacobsburg State Park in Belfast. Currently, with the cooperation of Trexler Nature Preserve, Wildlands Conservancy, County Commissioners and others, VMB is creating a volunteer-built network of sustainable, multi-use trails at Trexler Nature Preserve and Nockamixon State Park. Both of these new projects have attracted the attention of the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA) with which we are affiliated. IMBA has an award-winning Trail Care Crew program that includes two full-time, professional teams of trail experts who travel North America year-round, leading IMBA Trail building Schools, meeting with government officials and land managers, and working with IMBA-affiliated groups. IMBA's Crews have led more than 1,000 trail projects since the program debuted in 1997. The Crews teach "sustainable" trail building, which means building trails that last a long time and require minimal maintenance. This helps reduce trail damage, protects the environment, and enhances visitor enjoyment. The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew program has inspired great volunteer trail work across the U.S. and abroad - a big help to government agencies and land managers who have limited funding for trail construction and upkeep. As a direct result, there are now thousands of new and improved trails in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico and several European countries. That's a pretty impressive record. We would like to invite you and your scouts to join us for a really great learning experience. We would like to invite you to attend the VMB/IMBA Trexler Nature Preserve Trail Building Kick-Off Event on Thursday, September 17 from 6:00 – 9:30 PM in the Silk Lounge at the Allentown Brew Works. We would also like to invite you to attend the actual trail building school on Saturday, September 19 from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm at the Trexler Nature Preserve. All events are free of charge. Attend all or part of any. Please feel free to extend this invite to anyone you think might be interested and to print and post or forward the attachments to anyone. For more information or to RSVP check out our website at www.bikevmb.com. Thank you so much for you time. Sincerely, Tracy Wilson Vice President Valley Mountain Bikers www.bikeVMB.com PS – You also might want to check out our calendar of events – We’ve got “Take A Kid Mountain Biking Day” on October 4, 2009. It’s a great introductory clinic for kids age 7 to 17 on the sport of mountain biking at Jordan Creek Parkway in Whitehall. http://www.minsitrails.com/Newsletter/documents/TCCbuilddayinvitePRO.pdf

Cub Scout Day Camps: What a Great Summer!

The themes from the 2009 Minsi Trails day camps varied from time travel to carnivals. This year, 11camps were held throughout the council service area. Many thanks to all the volunteer staff members, day camp coordinators, program leaders, and den leaders who made everything happen. We'll see you at next year's 100th Anniversary themed day camps. Each summer, boys in grade 1 (as of September) through Webelos (grade 5) are eligible to attend day camp. The camps open Monday mornings from the end of school in June through August, and best of all...camps are held in your local communities. The cost is an outstanding value for a full week of fun. Boys normally receive a camp T-shirt and all the goodies needed for a week of fun. One adult is needed for every five boys to escort the adventurers through camp. Tiger Cub adult partners are expected to attend camp with their son. Adults: If you have a full week of free time and the ability to attend both camp training and planning sessions, why not be a full time, trained staff member. Check with your district professional to find out how! Sign Up Sign up information for 2010 will be posted on this page when details are finalized. Activities Activities vary from camp to camp, but usually range from traditional Scouting games to archery and BB instruction, crafts, nature study, sports, fishing, swimming, handicrafts, leatherwork, and camp skills. Some activities will vary from camp to camp depending on local and state laws. Dedicated family members, Scout leaders, and other adults can turn out to assist volunteer camp staff members. All of our Cub Scout Day Camps will have trained Camp Directors and Program Directors who are certified by BSA's National Camping School. Each Day Camp location is inspected and certified by a Day Camp Visitation team approved by BSA.

School Night

It is that time of year again. The beginning of the school year is the best time to get new boys to join the program. At this point, your pack should have a night planned to recruit new boys. Obviously, this is a time where you get to make an impression on both perspective new recruits and parents. While there are many things you can do to make your sign up night successful, here are some helpful hints. -Each family should sign in, so they can be contacted later if they choose not to register that night -Keep the kids separate from the adults. Boy Scouts are great to play games with the kids while you talk to parents -Provide parents with as much info as you can- Fundraising info, calendars, etc. -Show Off-This is your opportunity to show all the great things your pack does. Show pictures; get out the pinewood derby track, etc -Don’t let the night go by without using it to recruit new leaders. Having a list of every adult job in the pack available is a great tool. You may not get the Den Leader you need, but you can still get the Blue and Gold coordinator --Remember, the best way to give perspective families a good impression is to be organized. Do your best to cover all bases before the night arrives.

Webelos To Scout Transition

Over the last few months, a group of Council Volunteers have been working very hard to put together the definitive Webelos to Scout Transition plan. Documents are being created for not only Scoutmasters and Webelos leaders, but also parents and youth. Also, presentations and other forms of communication are in the formation stages. Over the next several months be on the lookout for materials to help the families of our council stay in Scouting.

Scouting for Food - 2009

Save these dates for Scouting For Food: Saturday 11/7 - distribution to homes and Saturday 11/14 - food pick-up from homes. Last year Scouting For Food (SFF) collected 250,000 pounds of food to help feed the hungry in our area. This year the need is even greater, so we’re hoping for an even larger turn out and higher food collection totals to help fill our local food banks. All SFF materials will be available in October and each District is coordinating the efforts of their units. Television public service announcements, courtesy of WFMZ TV-69, will again be used to let the public know about this important Scouting service project.
